Upgrade your sun protection

Mineral vs. chemical

Physical sunscreens use physical filters such as Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide whilst chemical sunscreens use chemical UV filters.

Mineral sunscreens (Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide) remain on the skin’s surface giving instant protection and unlike chemicals, they don’t break down or become unstable because they don’t absorb the sun’s rays but reflect it instead. Chemical sunscreens on the other hand when they come in contact with UV rays can potentially become phototoxic and cause allergies and irritation but more importantly cause bigger problems. Some chemical UV filters have been shown to have endocrine activity, mimicking oestrogen or testosterone.

Mineral
– Immediate protection when applied
– Remain stable
– Very few allergic reactions
– Less likely to get heat rash
– Do not interfere with hormones
– Non-Toxic
– Non-Toxic to coral

  Chemical
– Effective after 30 minutes of application
– Can become unstable if exposed to UV
– Exposure to UV rays can make  sunscreen molecules phototoxic and potentially cause allergies and irritation
– Can be toxic & toxic to coral
– Over heats skin causing heat rash

The main chemical sunscreens of concern are:Octylcrylene, Avobenzone, Octinoxate, (Octylmethoxycinnamate), Octisalate, Oxybenzone. These chemicals are found not only in suncreams but also in day creams, foundations and even lip products.

Did you know?

A US study has shown Oxybenzone to be fatal to baby coral.

The study claims that Oxybenzone affects coral by altering its DNA and acts as an endocrine disruptor causing baby coral to die. Australia and Hawaii are considering banning this chemical, you should too!
