The science behind skin ageing – what are your triggers?

We all know someone who looks great for their age, but what’s their secret? Genes? Surgery? Diet? Ageing is a natural process that cannot be avoided but there is plenty we can do to slow down the visible signs of ageing that can be easily incorporated into your daily routine.

Our skin actually starts to age from the age of 25 and occurs due to a combination of factors, which include both internal changes and external lifestyle factors. As we age the functionality of the collagen and elastin proteins which work as an internal ‘scaffold’ to help our skin stay strong, firm and flexible begins to decrease and we start to notice sagging and wrinkles.

However our lifestyle also plays an enormous role in speeding up the depletion of these natural networks. Smoking, eating too much sugar, not getting enough sleep and stress have all been shown to disrupt collagen production. Living a healthier, more positive life will help keep your skin looking ageless, but first you need to understand what your skin needs and why.

With seemingly endless anti-ageing remedies to choose from, and an abundance of sometimes-contradictory lifestyle advice, it can be difficult to know what to do for the best when it comes to looking after your skin.

Here are my tips looking after your skin and how to take ten years off your skin age:

Exfoliate every morning

It’s not unusual for skin to become drier, coarser and more sensitive as we age due to moisture loss and reduced integrity of the skin barrier. Gentle exfoliation can help to keep skin smooth and glowing and banish dullness, which leaves skin looking flat and prematurely aged.

I recommend skin brushing every morning to give your circulation a workout and help tone and firm skin. Focus on elbows, knees, and hands as these areas tend to become drier as we get older and often show the first tell tale signs of ageing.

Sleep well, breathe properly and exercise gently

This well-being trio is the secret to maintaining overall wellness.

Practicing yoga or Pilates helps to keep the body supple, releasing joints and strengthening muscles. It also helps with maintaining a good posture and flexibility, while breathing keeps the body more alkaline, which in turn, promotes good health. Try a brisk walk for 30 minutes every day to keep your heart healthy.

Sleep, or a lack of it, is one of the most visible ways of showing age. It may not be always possible to get your full eight hours each night but I recommend you try to get as near that as you can. To help you drift off I recommend the following nighttime routine:

  • Add 2kg of Epsom bath salts and soak for 20 minutes to calm and cocoon your body
  • Take five slow, deep breaths in and out in four cycles to calm the body and mind and prepare you for sleep

  • Turn off your phone and electrical devices. The blue light they emit can interfere with the body’s natural sleep cycles.

Choose the right skincare

We all know that taking care of our skin is essential for a healthy, glowing complexion and that as we get older, finding solutions for mature skin that really work can be frustrating. Mature skincare solutions don’t just need to be about anti-aging or trying to banish wrinkles, it can be a luxurious and pampering opportunity. Look out for richer, more nourishing oils and creams that really give you the deep care your skin will is looking for.

Rich moisturizers such as our Rose Diamond Face Cream, containing Omega Ceramide technology and Shea, Rosehip, Pomegranate and Evening Primrose extracts will strengthen skin and help redress the moisture balance. I’d also recommend layering a lighter weight serum such as Gene Expression Serum under your moisturiser for an extra boost, as well as sun protection during the day.

Eat to be healthy

Healthy skin also needs hydration from within. Ensuring your skin is well hydrated will prevent thinning, so drink plenty of water and avoid too much alcohol, salt and caffeine, all of which are dehydrating.

Just as oxidative stress has a damaging effect on the skin, eating the right foods can help to limit this process. A diet plentiful in colourful fresh fruits and vegetables is rich in antioxidants and micronutrients will certainly help. You can also add some

Omega-3 fatty acids to your diet to help boost collagen production and promote stronger cells. These are found in oily fish such as mackerel and salmon and in Chia seeds, walnuts and flaxseeds. I’d also recommend taking a daily probiotic to keep your tummy flat and strengthen your immune system.

Beware of too much sun

Key to preventing early ageing, wearing sun cream can help reduce signs of ageing by up to as much as 80%. Ultraviolet radiation, known as UV rays, penetrate deep into the layers of our skin and damage cells, reducing the skin’s elasticity which can cause it to age prematurely by destroying collagen. It also can lead to genetic mutations, which can go on to become cancerous.

Always wear a sun cream – I would recommend a minimum of SPF30 – between the months of April and October when the sun is at its strongest, and stay out of the sun completely between 12pm and 4pm. Make sure you reapply frequently and wear sunglasses and a hat to protect your eyes and face.

Keep make-up natural

Creating youthful-looking skin that glows with radiance and health is all about the mantra ‘less is more’.
